GT-31 still going strong

That’s OK. Too much help is better than none!

GT-31 still going strong

Thanks Chris. I looked into this but couldn’t get the firmware updater to talk to the device. Windows 11 doesn’t support the Prolific PL-2032 USB-to-serial chip in the GT-31. I’ve tried installing an older Windows driver but without success. I might try again later.

Locosys GT-31 frozen again

@Pink Duck: Yep, sounds like frequent recharging is the way to go.

@rorym: I've never had the patience to let the battery run down. How long does yours take? Perhaps the Bluetooth module consumes more power, because my GT-31 seems to go on forever.

Bridges

As _FrnchFrgg_ says, there are plenty of places with multiple layers of bridges. In fact, Bangkok's road system looks like it was designed to show off the layer tag to its best advantage.

Cambridge and the fact that I'm away from my Mac

That road has been there since at least 1997, but it was just a back alley. Just recently, in the last year or so, it was tarted up to make it look more like a real road, although it's still very narrow. I'd say that it's not under construction, so I'm minded to remove the construction tag.

Flamingo Ave says it's Flamingo Dr. - but its been corrected in database

Sorry to be pedantic, SVdP, but there is a section in the wiki -- http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:name -- entitled "Abbreviation (don't do it)". In other words, I think you should type "Drive" or "Avenue" in full.

However, I realise that this advice is not going to be very popular with some users, like you, who are working on areas where there are already hundreds of abbreviated street names. It seems that most British mappers follow the non-abbreviation policy but many American ones do not. Perhaps it would be safer to leave it that way rather than argue over it. I'll leave it up to you. All the best.

Workington North

@Jean-Marc: The wiki at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Railway_stations says to use just a node, with extra markings for platforms. But I don't see why you can't add an area on top of that to show the outline of the building(s).

Workington North

Yes, that worked. Thanks for pointing it out. :-)

Workington North

@Jean-Marc: I copied and pasted the URL correctly. It was the OSM software that turned it into a hyperlink and decided to include the closing parenthesis (but not the opening one). Perhaps if I put spaces at either end of the URL it will work. Here goes: ( http://osm.org/go/evNv0Jss )

Little Downham and Mepal, via Coveney and Wardy Hill, Cambridgeshire

It's a fascinating area to explore. Denver is another place with a complicated drainage system. There must be lots of unmapped stuff up there.

Perhaps I'll try a Sandisk Ultra. It's recommended by Locosys on their website.

First Time User Entry

Yes, welcome. You create a green dot in Potlatch by double-clicking in an empty area.

@JohnSmith: Correct, no reset button. The on/off button is a software-driven thing that doesn't work when the unit has crashed.

@IanLopez: No, the unit has had absolutely no contact with water. Nothing unusual happened to the unit before it crashed. You are correct, though, that it was stuck on "Sat Signal".

Thanks to both of you for your comments. I decided not to wait and disassembled the unit instead. It works fine now. The prime suspect is the SD card, which, although not on the "does not work list", is of the same make (Transcend) as a card that is on the list. If this happens frequently then I'll buy a different SD card.

Calibrating voice recorder

I would certainly recommend it. It made a huge difference to my note-taking ability, not to mention safety, and it only took me a few minutes to get the hang of the audio features in JOSM. It's impressive to watch the little orange arrow moving along the road in perfect time with the audio (thanks to David Earl's software, I think). And you can practise your radio voice for when you become famous :-)

One thing you need to be aware of with this approach is the vast amount of information that you will collect. My first 1-hour survey is taking me several hours to listen to and transfer to the map.

how did you find this?

Now and then I click the "User Diaries" tab at the top of the OSM homepage to see if there are any interesting entries.

First Edit

Welcome to the map! Can I just point out that OSM practice is not to abbreviate street names. For example, "Pl" should be spelled out as "Place" and "Dr" as "Drive". This is explained on the Key:name page on the wiki. Best wishes.

There's trunk and then there's trunk

Thanks. It's nice to know that you guys are tolerant towards beginners!

A10 detrunked

Sorry guys. I have realised my mistake and I've just finished undoing all my changes.

Good to hear about your experiences. What logger are you using?
