In the summer of 2007 I found OSM and drew the network of primary roads in Lithuania and the major streets in Vilnius from my own GPS traces while there was nothing there. I had bought a GPS mouse several years prior to that and had been logging all my travels with GPSDrive on my laptop, later with Maemo Mapper on Nokia 770 and N800, with a Bluetooth GPS receiver. Landsat was the best satellite imagery available at the time, it was barely good enough for tracing major features like lakes and forests, sometimes roads. Since then my work has been refined and overwritten many times over, but I’m still contributing improvements when I come across things to improve. I find them on my bike most often.
