In general I believe it is desirable to have both tags even though they may seem duplicative. Is there any guidance or best practice you are following in removing the Wikipedia tags? Many editors will add the deleted tags back if someone were to edit these objects https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Link_Improvement_Project#Mismatching_wikidata_and_wikipedia_tags

Hi :) IMO A Wikidata tag should be the only gateway to access Wikimedia projects on OSM. The ultimate point of Wdata is to provide machine-readable data & links to the same object in different databases, through a stable identifier.
This basically makes tagging Wikipedia completely redundant. This is only the case for the Wpedia tag though because Wpedia has a much more restrictive inclusion policy than Wdata, so anything that has a Wpedia page should have a Wdata object. it's better to encourage users to update Wdata than to use the Wpedia tag.in terms of best practice, this is the general trend and view of the Wpedia tag i've seen in the OSM Discord etc. Auto-addition of a Wikipedia tag when adding Wikidata was also recently removed from iD, for the same reasons i've listed 👍

Thanks. That's a super helpful response and I'll keep it in mind when I make future edits. I might check if it also means some validators should be updated to not flag Wikipedia tag removal in this situation.

There is no such PR for this at https://github.com/openstreetmap/iD/pulls
In any case - the real reason why adding a wikidata= field doesn't automatically add the wikipedia= one is that you're suppose to select the local language Wikipedia.
Kind of wish these hadn't been removed as it's simpler easier to directly click on the Wikipedia link rather than having to click twice to get to a POI's article.
