Mapping Pyongyang: a work of patience

Just wanted to say, this is so cool! I always forget to do before / after screenshots of my map work, so I love love love the gif you made there. Super cool project and I think out of all the mapping providers online, this might be the most detailed map of Pyongyang!

306 Bike Racks Mapped in Chicago

Wow folks thanks for all the comments!

I mainly use iD as my editor at home and Go Map!! when I’m out and about. The vast majority of these I end up adding using ground surveys while I’m waiting on Mapillary imagery to process. I’ve uploaded about 20GB of 360 photos to Mapillary, but it can take them up to a month to process with photo tagging. Hopefully the process goes muchhhhh faster after that’s done.

Haven’t tried out other editors, but I think what I have works for now. iD will import the objects from Mapillary when they finish their processing :)

Adding bike racks in Chicago

The data points that the city publishes are a great starting point, but are very spotty. I think the city records where each bike rack is by address, which isn’t always the most accurate. On top of that, the geocoder used for that public dataset didn’t have the most accurate points. I got a more updated set of bike racks here and put them into Google My Maps, using their geocoder to make everything happen. That should be a bit more accurate, but still not great.

Mapillary will extract bike rack locations from images automatically. I think what I’m going to do is use the bike rack map to get an idea of where I need to ride, and then take 360 photos and upload them to Mapillary so it can extract bike rack info. Then I can map those into OSM faster.
