A map painter's guide to label placement

Some have gone like https://www.openstreetmap.org/relation/7827644.

My would-be answers to the OSMF board survey

Too bad the OSMF did not ask for an outside view on what they produced internally.

@JBacc1, not only that, they refused actively to do so!

@imaco, your diary entry was highly appreciated in France: http://gis.19327.n8.nabble.com/Sondage-de-la-fondation-OSM-tt5982337.html#a5984203, I would have prefer to disagree!

The 2021 OSMF Survey of the OSM community has been activated

No survey is perfect. If you don’t want to take the survey, you don’t have to.

As mentioned by @marc_marc, @Verdy_p and @Midgard, GDPR compliance is mandatory for such a survey in European Union.

So should we consider your “response” pretending marc_marc would troll you that legal, illegal is you equal? Or that you missed something in the argumentation? Or that OSMF don’t care if people of the EU and UK (EU+UK= 500.000.000 inhabitants) can’t answer without using tricks? Is it your personal opinion or the one of the board?

Thanks in advance for clarification.

Viel Spaß noch

RC23 vill Klarnamen benutzen. Just do it ;-).

Why I am mapping trees

10 now ;-), adding a natural:=tree and a start_date (as fallen tree). Thanks for the idea to map them.

Why I am mapping trees

You can spare almost 100 € by using Thales theorem instead of high tech stuff. 0 W in sleep mode. 0 W in active mode too ;-). As I couldn’t find the name in English you get the French explanation, but math’ is international (and you know French speaking people).

Mapping addresses helped find a nine year old mistake in OpenStreetMap (also in Apple Maps, HERE, and TomTom)

@gecho111, that’s why In France (not in Germany ;-)) people like to use associatedStreet: points of adresses just need an addr:housenumber, the street name is in the associatedStreet and the street members of the relation. Still some duplication but much less. Add the possibility for multilingual names: adding on each single POA is just a nightmare. When streets get renamed, it’s easier too.

Displaying accessibility information in map icons

The link shows 3 colors that are valid color for color-blind people, it was about:

Here yellow is used for “wheelchair=limited”, green means “wheelchair=yes” and red for “wheelchair=no”. If there is no wheelchair tag the original icon is used.

Another possibility is to use a number of dots as scale (0 dot=0 1 dot=restricted, 2 dots=yes).

Displaying accessibility information in map icons

Use a wheelchair or be colorblind, but not both? Think about colors for colorblind people for accessibility.

Stop this Leadership Nonsense

mikelmaron “The English word leadership is meant in at least two different ways, and it’s particularly understood differently when translated.”

mikelmaron “ I’m not defending the term leadership. I think it doesn’t work because it’s confusing.”

RobJN “Frederik, I think you have completely misinterpreted this”

Christoph may have said that a bit a rude way, but if you, American-English white males ;-) - here the issue being American-English- are well aware that a term has several meanings and gets hardly translated, why are you using those words? Are you fully unaware that OpenStreetMap is a global project that tries to reflect the different cultures? And no, definitively no, we don’t have to be fluent in English to contribute to OpenStreetMap.

On the opposite when a questionnaire is written for people to apply for the board it has to be written in such a way that not only American-English white males feel confident to apply. Except if you want it do become the board of Facebook, MapBox and co.

mikelmaron “There’s another meaning of “leadership” which is better called facilitation.”

Then use facilitation instead!

Observe - cross-platform, offline, field mapping tool for OSM

@NunoCaldeira , as said on the site and several times in this thread, you need to use a development account, not a normal account. Here the previous answer: “Hi ndrw6 - you’d have to create an account on the OSM development API. This version of Observe doesn’t talk to the production API because we don’t to add test data there. You can create an account if you go here https://master.apis.dev.openstreetmap.org/”

Measuring merit in Wiki editing

Better implementation of watchlists: I sometimes miss changes because the watchlist displays the following change only. I did not yet found a way to permanently subscribe…

On your wiki profile page select the fourth email option, you’ll get an email when one item in your watch list changes. It works fine

OSM Needs Gateopeners too

@bgirardot, good points.

@dzertanoj, agreed espcially about Zveriks import strategy. It took us time to prevent a low quality import in Germany and France but we kept the door closed. His dataset wasn’t bad as such but as import. Seeing that an oil station is missing at a supermarket is good. Adding a gas station in the middle of the main building is not.

In this case a QA tool or something similar - Osmose, MapRoulette, StreetComplete… could be helpful: zooming relatively close to the supermarket with an aerial view as background layer and asking to locate a gas station. I mention the supermarket case because there it’s pretty obvious that a gas station exists close to the main building. But the data set was so old that he wanted to add closed stations too. So driving people to wrong places, worse that not driving them to right places.

Apparently we need more gateopeners to make him and others understand that low quality data can be used but MUST be used with caution.

Maps Update: 17th of April

@PlaneMad between16th March and 17th April it’s a month and a day, not just one day. Nevertheless amazing.

Metro Mapping Proposal (and what's wrong with proposals)

I know Antoine from Carto’Cité, I’m a French mapper and no, never heard them asking people to vote against this proposal. A subway station is hard to map, but we may have open data available or use improved techniques. I would not prohibit mapping a subway station as a polygon. Yes, split your proposal in two parts: a proposal for the changes and a wiki page for how to map a subway.
