Glenwild area mountain bike trails

Posted by Ted Percival on 21 August 2009 in English.

I'm progressively adding mountain bike trails in the Glenwild / Jeremy Ranch area off I-80 near Park City as I ride them. The most recent addition is a set of downhill trails in Bob's Basin. There are still a few connectors that are missing or incomplete, and I need to review the trail names - these have all been group rides, so there are few opportunities to stop and photograph the trail markers.

365 Days of OpenStreetMap: Day 2

Posted by Ted Percival on 25 June 2009 in English.

Skateboarded South-East Pleasant Grove and North Lindon, mainly adding missing street names but also a few POIs and some minor corrections to TIGER-sourced street names (eg. Avenue not Street). There was an unmapped cemetery, two churches, and a handful of pedestrian crossings. I also saw a little bit more of the Pleasant Grove / Lindon border, and updated the map accordingly.

This was my second skateboard-based mapping day, it works well for new developments with smooth asphalt (bitumen) or concrete footpaths. The biggest benefit I was expecting was having my hands free to hold on to my map or phone (GPS & camera). It certainly beats the pack-unpack ritual of mapping while riding a bike safely. On the other hand it limits the kind of areas that can be mapped, but I think I'll definitely keep a skateboard as part of my residential mapping kit.

Traced in the Jordanelle Reservoir and retraced US-40 from Silver Creek Junction (I-80) to Heber City including the two or three interchanges. Interestingly Mayflower (the exit near the Jordanelle Reservoir) is signposted as if it is a town ("village" or "hamlet"), but Wikipedia doesn't say anything about it in its articles on Wasatch County and Jordanelle Reservoir.

Also retraced US-189 from Heber City south to Deer Creek Reservoir. Had to stop there because the road has changed since the aerial imagery and it is not completely clear which path the road takes (the old road is now a cycleway), so I might wait until I have a GPS trace of it. On the other hand there is some evidence of road construction which is a pretty good hint about the current road position.

New roads in Vineyard mapped

Posted by Ted Percival on 5 April 2009 in English.

Today I mapped some new streets in Vineyard (a small town in Metropolitan Salt Lake City, Utah). It should be almost complete now, and a bunch of non-existent TIGER streets were removed. Many of the new streets don't have name signs up yet, but having the streets mapped will make a second pass for name gathering easier when the time comes. There are no houses on the new streets yet (except for one derelict farm house with "Enter if you want to die" spray painted on its front door), so it's unlikely someone will be looking to go there as a destination just yet.

Recording was done using my G1, the ability to take geotagged photos of street signs and physical conditions such as gates, stub roads and power lines was nice.

New phone with GPS

Posted by Ted Percival on 14 March 2009 in English.

I got a new phone[1] today which has a GPS. One of the first things to do is determine how well aligned the Yahoo! imagery is. Around my local area[2] it appears to be spot-on. On Sunday I'll be heading a bit further north towards Salt Lake City so I'll see how well it lines up. The TIGER data around there doesn't match the Yahoo! imagery - I suspect the imagery will be correct and the TIGER data misaligned, but it will be good to know for sure.

Most of St Lucia named

Posted by Ted Percival on 15 May 2008 in English.

Cycled around St Lucia tonight on my way home from work gathering street names. Most of the missing residential streets have now been named. Just a couple on the East and near Ironside left to do. Not bad considering I only planned on finishing the streets North of Sir Fred Schonell Drive.

Last weekend's mapping in Chelmer and Graceville has finally rendered. I also remembered the names of three streets and the primary school in Buderim (Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia) so they have been added, but it's an otherwise sparse area.
