I’ve updated Fengtinghe Reservoir (凤亭河水库) today with the help of josm’s scanaerial plugin using ESRI imagery and additionally added parts manually where scanaerial wasn’t detailed enough.

I had created the reservoir relation about 10 years ago using Lakewalker plugin (now deprecated) with Landsat imagery.

Looks much more realistic now ;)

Six months busy in Sichuan

Posted by katpatuka on 26 June 2020 in English.

I think I was really 6 months busy in Sichuan adding missing towns, townships and subdistricts with their English name and wikipedia/wikidata tags. Not only on osm but also on zhwiki and wikidata I added lots of stuff…

China’s administrative infrastructure is crazy! In urban regions a lot changed in December 2019: townships were upgraded to towns and towns in subdistricts. Some counties became districts or county-level cities. Sometimes places get a new name even. And that wasn’t necessarily immediately reflected in zhwiki because zhwiki is still blocked in China! So you are always playing catch-up…

China is developing very fast and the biggest problem for us mappers is: missing up-to-date imagery ! Sometimes I had to use 10 year old imagery from one provider because imagery from other providers were cloud covered. No usable GPS traces - only maybe for main trunk or primary roads. At least there are more Chinese users now editing on OSM…

I stopped checking Chengdu urban centre - too tiring - and I hate big cities ;)

it took a month to add 99 percent of all district boundaries of Afghanistan. Only problem left is the fate of Darwaz district which I couldn’t decide: en.wiki says it got split into Maimay, Nusay and Shekay District but other sources name a Darwaz and Darwaz-e-Balla District.

Someone else can now make nice svg-files for use with wikipedia articles!

il sınırları haritaları

Posted by katpatuka on 3 November 2010 in Turkish (Türkçe).

Posted by katpatuka on 17 October 2010 in Turkish (Türkçe). Last updated on 19 October 2010.

added some 3000km highways in Cameroon, Nigeria, Benin and Mali from an interesting gpx-track at bikemap.net. Only small parts had already existed on that route - partly traced from landsat. No documentation to be found about the road network of Nigeria... I wonder where wikipedia articles like A123 highway (Nigeria) get there information from...

I don't know how many km rivers I added the last few days in Gabon, Congo-Brazzaville and Cameroon! (... and in other well-mapped corners of world un-emplyed micro-mappers start to map benches and gully covers...!)

Wikipedia is way behind in river decriptions too: no coordinates of river mouths, sometimes no names of affluents and tributaries (but the really huge main rivers)... Best sources for river names is still the UN (for example http://www.un.org/Depts/Cartographic/map/profile/gabon.pdf). Lots to do in Africa - I don't use potlatch for mapping there; josm with landsat has much higher resolution.

And - besides rivers - (nearly) no gpx-tracks to be found in the net! (...was just lucky with finding really good tracks of N2 road(s) in Gabon, Congo and Cameroon ;-)

Now look at some of these never heard river names:
Ogooué basin: Offoué, Ngounié, Mpassa, Ivindo,...
Ivindo basin: Djoua, Liboumba, Mvoung,...
Alima basin: Dziélé, Lékéti,...
Congo basin: Djoué, Sangha, Likouala, Léfini,...
Likouala basin: Mambili, Kouyou, Lékoli, Lengoue,...

...sort of project of the month for me... ;-)

rivers in China

Posted by katpatuka on 3 February 2010 in English.

...mapping rivers in China is really exiting: you stumble about unmapped rivers all the time! You try to find a bigger city along the river and look it up in the english wikipedia just to find a location stub! No river mentioned there. Even the wikipedia is way behind! Then you start to google "thatcityname river" but the only thing you learn is that there are no good sources concerning location data in China! Luckily years ago I occasionally bought a map on the fleamarket: China Far East, Hallwag, 1989/1990 - but it's 1:6.000.000 and the names are odd. At least it gives you an idea which river basin it may be...

Don't know why but the borders between Nakhchivan - Armenia - Azerbaijan were missing. I added them using source from gadm.org. The exclaves and enclaves of AZ and AM are still missing (were not in the sources)...

From wikipedia:
In Armenia, there exist three Azerbaijani exclaves. Barxudarli (41°00′N 45°13′E) and Yuxari Askipara (41°04′N 45°01′E) are in north-eastern Armenia. The other one, Karki (39°48′N 44°58′E), is located north of the region of Nakhchivan (which is a detached fragment of Azerbaijan stuck between Armenia, Iran and Turkey). Reciprocally, there exists one Armenian exclave, a village called Artsvashen in north-western Azerbaijan (40°38′N 45°31′E).

As I'm working on rivers and their basins I thought I might try to just add child relations to a parent relation - but it did not render!

Example:
Take Lena river,
1. make a relation for the whole length of the river
2. find some tributaries (Vitim, Kirenga, Olyokma) and repeat step 1
3. make a river basin relation and add relations Lena, Vitim, Kirenga, Olyokma
4. test it

It did not render. It only renders when adding all single ways of all rivers (1).

Finished the Ob tributary Chulym/Чулым osm-relation, made a screenshot using OSM Relation Analyzer, uploaded it to wikipedia commons and updated Russian wikipedia [[Чулым (приток Оби)]] - another OpenStreetmap Map on wikipedia ;-)

Added relation for Lanxin railway from Lanzhou to the border of Kazakhstan.

Now I'd like to have a nice topo background a la google terrain showing the rendered rail and upload it to wikipedia - but the result of http://betaplace.emaitie.de/webapps.relation-analyzer/osm.jsp?relationId=163418 doesn't looks very promising if you zoom out and choose CycleMap to display the map...

Such a osm-service is still missing and would be very good: something which would be worth to upload to wikipedia. If relations have a smaller diameter the CycleMap can produce some nice looking map (if the region is covered) but for more than 1000 km distance there is nothing appropriate...
